Februrary 2, 2026
Evans praises Alawieh’s “clear vision” and “determination” to bring needed resources to several Wayne County communities in the District
Dearborn, MI (January 27, 2026) – Wayne County Executive Warren Evans has endorsed Abbas Alawieh in his bid to serve as state senator for District 2, which includes Dearborn, Dearborn Heights, Allen Park, Melvindale, and parts of Taylor and Detroit. Alawieh, a Wayne County native who moved back to Michigan after spending years working on Capitol Hill, launched his campaign last month with a promise to “fight for every member of this district like they are family.”
“Abbas entered this race with a clear vision for improving our communities, and it’s a vision that is about bringing people together and bringing resources where they’re needed most,” Executive Evans said. “His determination to ensure Wayne County continues to lead the way in quality of life is undeniable.” Evans, who has served as County Executive since 2015, will be featured as a special speaker at the Abbas for State Senate community kickoff event on Thursday, February 12th at Byblos Banquet Center in Dearborn. The kickoff will be an open press event. Members of the press are encouraged to RSVP here.
Alawieh, a former congressional chief of staff who developed a reputation as a legislative juggernaut during his Capitol Hill tenure, said he takes inspiration from Evans’s long track record of building relationships that translate into wins for the public. “As State Senator, partnering with our County Executive to deliver historic investments across Wayne County will be a top priority. To have Executive Evans’s trust and support means the world, not only because he will be a stellar partner in governance, but also because I know I will draw on his leadership and example when serving the residents of District 2.”
A product of Dearborn Public Schools and two-time University of Michigan graduate, Alawieh is a public policy leader who has spent his career fighting for policies that uplift working families and advance fairness, transparency, and accountability in government. Over the course of his career as a legislative strategist at the federal level, Alawieh authored dozens of bills and amendments that passed the U.S. House of Representatives on issues ranging from housing to immigration to affordability. He previously served as Chief of Staff to Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO) and as a senior legislative staffer to Reps. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) and Andy Levin (D-MI), where he helped orchestrate policy action that kept people housed during the pandemic, advanced bipartisan leadership to stop unjust deportations, and removed lead water distribution pipes. Alawieh also served as a Democratic National Convention Delegate in 2024 after leading the pro-peace Uncommitted movement, helping reshape the national conversation on foreign policy.
